Learn to Sail

A class for sailors 8 and up to learn how to sail in Sail Cubes. By the end of the class, students can be expected to be able to sail perpendicular to the wind (reach) without the assistance of a coach. Students will be expected to learn how to rig their own boat, which means there are a few basic knots they will be expected to learn. Although they will be taught all points of sail, students will not be expected to perform all points of sail on the water without the coach's assistance.

Classes are held:

September 14th to October 26th

Every Thursday from 3:30pm to 7:00pm

Pricing:

Thursday: $275 per session

$25 member discount

Intermediates

Intermediates is the final class before sailboat racing is introduced. Optimists are the preferred boat, but classes are available in Sabots as well. Students in the Intermediate class will be taught the basics of how to sail around a racing course. To do this, students will need to master all points of sail, including the most difficult--upwind. Students will also need to learn some of the basic right of way rules in order to move onto racing classes.

Classes are held:

September 14th to October 26th

Every Thursday from 3:30pm to 7:00pm

Pricing:

Thursday: $275 per session

Opti Green

Students learn the basics of racing, and begin to participate in SCYYRA Carrie series. The Carrie series is the Southern California racing series for Optimists. Students in this class will continue to improve their knowledge of the racing rules of sailing, and begin to train together in structured drills. These drills will help them compare speed with one another more accurately, so that they can make improvements. Students in Green Fleet will also learn how a sailboat race is conducted, and what to look for on a race course.

Thursday classes are held:

Every Thursday from September 14th to October 26th

From 3:30pm to 7:00pm

Saturday classes are held:

Opti Champ

Students in this class are perfecting their race craft and actively competing in the SCYYRA Carrie series. By the time they are in this class, they should know their racing rules of sailing and be able to set up and run most drills independently. In the Opti Champ class, students will be learning more about race strategy and tactics (how to position themselves in a race to give them the highest probability of a favorable wind shift). Students will learn how current, sails, waves, and wind work. Students in this class will also be taught how to team race--a special style or racing that is usually three boats racing against another team of three boats.

Every Thursday from September 14th to October 26th

From 3:30pm to 7:00pm
